After prayerful consideration, and for the safety of all involved in the preparations and running of our Bazaar, we have decided to cancel the Country Store Bazaar for 2020.
The Origin of Our Country Store Bazaar
There are a few other church bazaars in our area, but there is only one Country Store Bazaar. And, it all began with a twelve pound chunk of cheese!
In October 1960, Muriel Briggs and her family visited relatives in Ontario, Canada to celebrate their Thanksgiving, which is held on the second Monday in October. A cousin, who worked for Borden's Cheese Division, gave her a 12 pound piece of cheese to sell at the upcoming Addisville Church Bazaar. At that time it was held in the old Fire House at the corner of Second Street Pike and Almshouse Road, where the Northampton Commons Park now stands. But at what table should the cheese be sold? Member Bertha Uhl suggested a "Country Store Table." The Bazaar used to be held on the first weekend (yes, Friday and Saturday) in November, so in two weeks time, a Country Store appeared on the Fire Hall's stage. Penny candy, Farmer's Almanacs, soft pretzels, cider, Church plates, candied apples, and the twelve pound piece of cheese were sold! Dorothy Davis and Audrey Barwis, Bazaar Co-Chairmen, liked the idea, so the next year—1961—our Bazaar moved to the Chapel (now Ohev Shalom) and the whole Bazaar took on a Country Store theme.
We still have nothing on consignment. All of our tables maintain a quaint, old-fashioned feeling, offering high quality "one of a kind" items. We have given other imaginative names to our tables: "White Elephant" is now "Treasure Chest"; "Aprons and Tea Towels" is "Potpourri"; "Dried Flower Arrangements" is "Weeds and Seeds." The "Bake Table" still offers homemade baked goodies. Some tables are "rather new"— "The Children's Shoppe"; "His Harvest Haus" (new and gently used Christian books); "Soup Tureen." Our fabulous Addisville cooks still delight us with a delicious lunch and dinner.
And, the 12 pound piece of cheese has grown to 418 pounds sold since 2005!
